US Iraq War Deaths toll over 4000
And there are disturbing signs that the overall level of violence in Iraq may again be rising. First were reports that General Petraeus might favor a “pause” in further withdrawals of US troops once troop levels got down to about 140,000 this summer. Perhaps he was just being prudent by giving US commanders time to assure themselves that the progress they had achieved from the surge would continue even as the US drew down its forces.
OOIBC: Out Of Iraq Bloggers Caucus: 4000 US Deaths in Iraq
In our 6th year of military operations in Iraq, we knew this day would come, we knew this number would come. 4000. Any death from Iraq is unacceptable, but to hear the announcement of the 4000th US death in Iraq on Easter, a day of joyous celebration, is an affront, one of those karmic ironies that should not happen.

Either milestone — 5 years, 4ooo KIA — would be sad enough in its own right. But to have them coincide like this makes it especially painful. And thanks to the Student organizers at Rutgers, folks in Central Jersey have a powerful way to register their discontent. (Details below the fold)

OOIBC: Out Of Iraq Bloggers Caucus: Bush & the Mathematics of War: 4000, 1 million, 2 million
And so the great sacrifice of Bush comes full circle to the idealization of a tyrant that his own country put into power, deposed, and now restores to martyrdom. And this “noble” cause, this Iraq War of the Republicans and their Democratic Party enablers, claims its 4000th American corpse. The Iraqi bodies are not even counted by Bush and his government. That sacrifice might overwhelm the flimsy temple Bush is building for his unholy war.
Crooks and Liars » Cheney on 4000 American Dead: -They Volunteered.-
I can only speak for myself here, but I reckon that many of the brave young men and women who volunteered after 9/11 did so with the expectation that they would be hunting down those that actually attacked us that day; not that they would be put in an impossible situation (in a country that had nothing whatsoever to do with the attack on us) where they are expected to mediate a religious civil war that has raged for thousands of years. In fact, it’s a disservice to their heroic sacrifice to expect them to do so.

Summary of Findings: Awareness of Iraq War Fatalities Plummets
Public awareness of the number of American military fatalities in Iraq has declined sharply since last August. Today, just 28% of adults are able to say that approximately 4,000 Americans have died in the Iraq war. As of March 10, the Department of Defense had confirmed the deaths of 3,974 U.S. military personnel in Iraq.

Should the Americans leave now 09-12-2008
Since the Americans came to Iraq we have had nothing but trouble. It is better that they go and just leave us alone. They’ve been here for five years and we had no security – so what is the point in them staying? And before they go they could release all those Iraqi men they picked up and are still keeping in their prisons.?

The Washington Post Undercounts Iraq Deaths
The Washington Post’s weekly Saturday feature on “Iraq War Casualties” has consistently listed a “maximum count” of Iraqi civilian deaths that is dramatically lower than the likely civilian death tolls assessed through surveys of the Iraqi public.
In the most recent edition of this feature (10/25/08) which the Post has been publishing as a chart in the Saturday newspaper since August 2, the Post offers a “maximum count” of 96,719 Iraqi civilian deaths. Yet as the Post itself acknowledged in a footnote to its chart on June 15, 2007, there are studies that put the Iraqi death toll much higher: A 2006 survey by Iraqi physicians and overseen by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health estimated over 600,000 killed at the time.

Gold Star Mom Speaks Out -June 23- 2008
As a Gold Star mother, (my son, Lt Ken Ballard, was KIA in May 2004) I have no sympathy for the likes of Feith (or Bush, Rumsfeld, Cheney, Wolfowitz, Rice, Perle et al). Feith’s efforts to rewrite history are an insult to the country, but mostly to the military; the boots on the ground who acted on the orders of their commander-in chief.

He was in the military and served this country with pride in Afghanistan between 2001-2003. Anyways, we watched Phelps win the gold and started talking about how awesome the opening ceremony was. I asked if he saw clips of President Bush at the opening ceremony.
He said that he has been embarrassed by our president multiple times, but that Friday night took the cake. He became livid while talking about Bush checking his watch, looking bored, and the now infamous, tapping the American flag on his knee.t
Duty, Honor, Country ? and Undermining the Chain of Command 9-10-2008
Even so, I have to say that Keane’s remarks to Gates go against everything I have ever heard and ever learned from these veterans about the military and what makes it work.
Here’s why, and it’s pretty simple: there is nothing more sacred in the military culture than the chain of command. Nothing.
I heard this from high school classmates, home briefly after finishing basic training, and I heard it from flag officers after they returned from the Persian Gulf War in the 1990s. The military runs because the chain of command works.
Duty, Honor, Country — that’s the short version of the importance of the Chain of Command.
American Solider – We Blew Her to Pieces
?I remember one woman walking by,? said Jason Washburn, a corporal in the U.S. Marines who served three tours in Iraq. ?She was carrying a huge bag, and she looked like she was heading toward us, so we lit her up with the Mark 19, which is an automatic grenade launcher, and when the dust settled, we realised that the bag was full of groceries. She had been trying to bring us food and we blew her to pieces.?
